Most important destinations require preparation. We plan for vacations, retirement, education, medical care, and countless other parts of life. Yet many people give little thought to the greatest destination of all—heaven.

Heaven should never be treated as something we will simply “figure out” later. Our earthly lives are brief and uncertain. James described life as “a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away” (James 4:14, NASB). After death comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Therefore, planning for eternity is not gloomy or fearful—it is wise.

But we must understand what it means to have a plan. We do not create our own way to heaven. God has already provided the way through His Son. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Our responsibility is to learn His will, trust His promises, and respond to His gospel.

A sincere person may assume that being religious, morally decent, or occasionally attending worship is enough. Jesus warned that the road leading to destruction is broad, while the way leading to life is narrow (Matthew 7:13–14). Good intentions cannot replace obedience to Christ.

God’s plan begins with hearing the gospel, because faith comes from hearing the word of Christ (Romans 10:17). We must believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 8:24). Faith then leads us to repent—to turn away from sin and surrender our lives to God (Acts 17:30). We confess Jesus Christ before others (Romans 10:9–10), and as penitent believers, we are baptized into Christ for the forgiveness of sins (Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:27).

These responses do not earn salvation. We are saved by God’s grace through the sacrifice of Jesus. Baptism, repentance, and confession do not place God in our debt; they are the obedient responses God has joined to receiving His gracious gift.

Our plan must also include remaining faithful. Becoming a Christian is the beginning of a new life, not the end of our responsibility. Jesus calls us to follow Him, worship with His church, grow in His Word, resist sin, serve others, and remain faithful until death (Revelation 2:10).

So, what is your plan for heaven? Have you studied God’s Word for yourself? Have you obeyed the gospel as the people in the book of Acts did? Are you presently walking faithfully with Christ?

Do not leave eternity to chance. Do not depend on family tradition, personal feelings, or what someone else has told you. Open the Bible, learn the gospel, and compare your life with the teaching of Jesus.

God wants you to be saved. Jesus gave His life to make salvation possible. Heaven is prepared—but you must prepare to go there.
