We spend much of life protecting things we value: our homes, our health, our families, and our savings. Yet we can become so occupied with keeping these that we neglect what matters eternally. In 2 Timothy 1, Paul reminds Timothy of four things Christians must never lose. 

Guard Your Faith — 2 Timothy 1:3–6
Paul remembered the sincere faith that lived in Timothy, his mother Eunice, and his grandmother Lois. Their influence mattered, but Timothy’s faith had to be his own. Paul also urged him to rekindle the spiritual gift he had received through Paul’s laying on of hands. Although our circumstances differ from Timothy’s, the need for diligence remains. Faith must be nourished through Scripture, prayer, and faithful obedience. What we neglect can gradually weaken. 

Stand for Christ — 2 Timothy 1:7–8
Fear can silence us when someone needs to hear the truth. Paul reminded Timothy that God had given a spirit of power, love, and discipline. Timothy must not be ashamed of the Lord or of Paul’s imprisonment. We, too, must stand for Christ with courage, treating others with love while refusing to hide our convictions. 

Trust the Gospel — 2 Timothy 1:9–12
Our hope rests in God’s grace revealed through Jesus Christ. Through the gospel, Christ brought life and immortality to light. Paul’s suffering had not destroyed his confidence because he knew the One he had believed. Our circumstances may change, but Christ remains worthy of our trust. His promises reach beyond the grave. 

Hold Sound Doctrine — 2 Timothy 1:13–18
Paul instructed Timothy to retain the standard of sound words and guard what had been entrusted to him. The gospel is not ours to rewrite. We must learn it, live it, and teach it faithfully, even when others turn away. 

Let us examine what we are protecting. Possessions will eventually pass into other hands. Faith, courage, confidence in Christ, and devotion to His truth deserve our attention today. 

“Be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” — 2 Timothy 2:1, NASB
