No one plants corn and expects to gather wheat. The harvest follows the seed. God built that principle into His world, and He applies it to the moral and spiritual choices of our lives. Paul wrote, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7, NASB). Our decisions may seem small when we make them, but they are seeds. In time, they show what they truly were.
This truth should sober us, but it should also give us hope. A person who has sown sin does not have to remain in it. Through Christ, forgiveness is real, repentance is possible, and a different life can begin. But the new harvest begins with new seed.
1. Every Action Plants a Seed
What we repeatedly think, say, watch, spend, excuse, and choose becomes seed in the soil of our heart. A bitter thought may feel private. A dishonest word may feel small. A compromise may seem harmless because no one else notices. Yet every choice moves us in a direction.
Hosea warned Israel, “They sow the wind and they reap the whirlwind” (Hosea 8:7, NASB). Israel did not reach spiritual ruin in one day. The people rejected God a little at a time. They trusted their own ways, adopted false worship, and ignored the Lord’s warnings. The storm they reaped was far greater than the wind they first sowed.
The same danger is present today. Sin promises a moment of pleasure, control, or relief. It does not show the harvest it brings to a marriage, a conscience, a family, or a soul. God sees the seed even when others do not. That is why we must ask not only, “Can I do this?” but also, “What will this choice grow in me?”
2. Seeds Grow Into a Harvest
A seed does not remain a seed. It develops. Habits become character, character shapes conduct, and conduct leads us toward consequences. This happens in both good and bad directions. The person who repeatedly gives in to anger becomes easier to anger. The person who repeatedly hides sin becomes less sensitive to shame. The person who repeatedly neglects prayer becomes spiritually weak.
But righteous seed also grows. The believer who opens the Bible each day develops a mind shaped by God’s truth. The Christian who chooses forgiveness becomes more like Christ. The one who quietly serves learns the joy of putting others first. Paul said, “He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Corinthians 9:6, NASB).
We sometimes become impatient because we do not see immediate results. A farmer does not dig up his seed every morning to see whether it is growing. He keeps tending the field. In the same way, faithful choices often grow slowly. Do not give up on prayer, Bible study, worship, kindness, or teaching your children. God sees the seeds of faithfulness, and His time is right.
3. Sow to the Spirit Today
Paul contrasts sowing to the flesh with sowing to the Spirit in Galatians 6:8. To sow to the flesh means feeding the sinful desires that pull us away from God. To sow to the Spirit means choosing what strengthens faith, holiness, and obedience. It is a daily decision about what we will put into our mind and what kind of person we are becoming.
If you have sown sinful seed, do not hide from God. Come to Him honestly. Jesus died so that sin could be forgiven. Turn from the old path, confess the Lord, and obey the gospel. Then keep putting good seed into your life. Read His word. Pray. Worship with God’s people. Remove what leads you back into sin. Serve someone who needs encouragement. These are not empty religious motions. They are the beginning of a changed harvest.
None of us can change yesterday’s seed, but by God’s grace we can decide what we plant today. The harvest ahead will not be an accident. What you reap is what you sow. Let us sow to the Spirit and live for the eternal life God promises.
